Mel's Homestays Journey

When Mel Richards first considered fostering, she never imagined the path would lead her to becoming a Homestays provider—and to two life-changing relationships.

After initially considering fostering younger children, Mel realised her lifestyle wasn’t quite suited to school runs. But her research led her to Homestays, and she hasn’t looked back.

Based in Dalton, Mel opened her home to teenagers in need of stability, guidance, and a safe place to grow. What began with curiosity and a few concerns quickly turned into one of the most rewarding experiences of her life.

With a part-time job and a lively dog, Mel wasn’t sure she’d be the right fit. But with reassurance from the Homestays team and a bit of research, she discovered that supporting older teens was not only possible—it was a perfect match. Since then, Mel has welcomed two young women into her home, helping them build confidence, independence, and a brighter future.

She said: “I was worried at first but teenagers don’t mind a yappy dog, and the flexibility of Homestays fits perfectly around my job and other family commitments.”

Building Trust, Changing Lives

Mel’s first Homestays experience began with a 16-year-old girl who had faced significant difficulties but Mel saw beyond the challenging behaviour.

“I could see the child who needed help, someone to reach out to her. She stayed with me for 16 months and completely turned her life around— she started college, found a lovely boyfriend, and even started walking the Wainwrights!”

A heartfelt letter from the girl’s grandmother still brings tears to Mel’s eyes: “She leaves you a very different girl to the one who arrived, which is a testament to your patience and guidance.”

Independence with Support

Mel’s current Homestays young person is thriving. Living with Mel has given her the freedom she never had in a children’s home, and she’s also preparing for college and independent living, when she turns 18 next year.

“She’s respectful and independent—cooks her own meals, does her laundry, and always keeps me informed when she’s out. But she knows I’m here when she needs advice or support.”

Mel’s Message to Future Providers

“I find it hard to put into words how rewarding it can be. Don’t let misconceptions about teenagers hold you back. I’ve had two wonderful girls and it’s been amazing. If you’re sympathetic, understanding, and a good listener, you can make a real difference. Seeing the girls flourish and take new life skills with them when they leave—it’s the best feeling in the world.”

Mel’s story is one of patience, transformation, and the quiet power of simply being there. Her journey shows that you don’t need to be perfect to make a difference—you just need to care.
