Cumbria Fostering marks LGBTQ+ Adoption & Fostering Week 2026 with call for more LGBTQ+ foster carers
Now’s the time for LGBTQ+ people across Cumbria to consider fostering, as Cumbria Fostering supports the launch of LGBTQ+ Adoption & Fostering Week 2026, running from Monday (2 March). Led nationally by the charity New Family Social, this year’s campaign highlights that while there is never a “perfect” moment to begin the journey, there is an urgent need for more foster carers right now across the country. Across England, the government has committed to recruiting 10,000 new foster care places to help meet the growing number of children who need safe, stable and loving homes. Cumbria is no exception, and more LGBTQ+ individuals and couples are encouraged to step forward to ensure children can remain in their local communities and experience the security and care they deserve. Local foster carers Dan and Chris encourage others to take the leap Foster carers Dan Bell and his husband Chris, from Barrow, want to reassure others that support is always available: “We would encourage anyone who’s thinking about fostering to just go for it. It’s emotionally rewarding and you’ll never be on your own. There are ups and downs, of course, but there is a huge support network around you. We have fantastic social workers and emotional health and wellbeing workers who check in regularly, and that makes a big difference. “Seeing young people thrive, grow in confidence and live their lives to the fullest is worth its weight in gold. Fostering has made our family bigger than we ever imagined, and we wouldn’t change a thing.” Children’s Services leaders highlight the value of LGBTQ+ carers Cllr Janet Battye, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Education and Skills at Westmorland and Furness Council, added: Cllr Emma Williamson, Executive Member for Children’s Services, Family Wellbeing and Housing at Cumberland Council, said: Find out more or join an information event During LGBTQ+ Adoption & Fostering Week, Cumbria Fostering will host a special online information session on Tuesday 3 March, 6pm–7pm.
